In the wake of the recent arrests of 39 protestors from the Democracy Hub, some Ghanaian celebrities have taken to social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), to advocate for their release under the hashtag #FreeTheCitizens.
The Democracy Hub protestors were remanded into custody following a three-day demonstration at the 37 Roundabout in Accra, where they voiced concerns about illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) and economic mismanagement.
Among the celebrities leading the online charge are prominent figures from the entertainment, sports, and creative industries, who are using their platforms to highlight what they describe as the unfair treatment of the demonstrators.
Award-winning musicians Efya, Black Sherif, Kelvynboy, Ko-Jo Cue, Kinaata, among others have spoken up.
The protest, which was organized to draw attention to the impact of illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) and the economic challenges facing the country, saw demonstrators clashing with security forces, leading to the arrests.
Despite this, the movement has gained significant traction online, with citizens and public figures alike calling for the immediate release of those in custody.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how authorities will respond to the growing social media campaign and whether the protestors will be granted release in the coming days.
